The Augustins have been growing fruit on their farm for many years, at first conventionally and for over 10 years now, according to organic standards. Over the years they were able to observe how the soil has changed. Today it is visibly looser and more invigorated, with a good crumb structure, which makes it easier to work – as a result of effective composting.
The effect: healthy soil – healthy trees – healthy fruit!
By means of a "beating tray" we can see how the biodiversity in the apple trees has increased. Apart from the diversity, the number of insect species has also increased in relation to the times during which the farm was cultivated according to conventional standards. An increasing variety of plant species have colonised the other trees, the biotope and the field margins, since herbicides are no longer being used on the farm. Places which boast a diversity of flora are also inhabited by a larger number of microorganisms. This in turn improves the diet of predatory articulates.
Students from the Hamburg University have carried out studies on the population of birds, mice, locusts, amphibians and dragonflies. Their results confirm the assumed increased biodiversity on organic farms.
